Harvard’s Institute for English Language Programs (IEL) welcomes students from around the world who wish to improve their English skills. Courses will prepare you to continue advanced studies at American universities, to communicate with ease in professional situations, and to use English with confidence in all aspects of your life.
Each IEL class begins with a reading that presents the theme that classes will explore. In 2007, the theme was “Africa and the World.” Each class read the speech that former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan delivered on the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence, and this set the tone for the course of study throughout the summer.
Harvard Summer School offers a range of programs for local and international students whose levels of experience with English vary.
These programs are for international students who wish to study English full time. Students attend class Monday through Friday and have the option to live on campus.

For students who live in the Boston area, this program offers evening courses that meet on campus two times each week.
